In response to Chinese President Xi Jinping's call for more frequent cultural exchanges between students, 24 US high school students are in China this week. Their visit so far has included interactions with local high school and college students to learn about Chinese culture. Lu Sirui reports.
Drawing or writing poems on fans, was a way of expressing love to friends and families by traditional Chinese literati.
But in this high school class, this old-fashioned art ignited new passion among U.S. students.
ALLI PERAL McGHINNIS Steilacoom High School "It's very cool. It's something I have never done before. It's super fun. He was teaching me the correct way to hold it. It feels different."
ASHER JAMES WEIDEMAN Steilacoom High School "I just decided to draw as much as I could. It's just a bunch of fish. I will tell my friends back in the U.S. It's easy to do and looks very good."
But the "fan art" can also be physical and sportive.
With the help of college professors, the students are learning the Tai Chi Fan dance.
Dragon dance is often performed to welcome guests.
But the guests today decided to dance by themselves.
The students say it's harder than it looks.
ISAIAH DANIEL LONG Lincoln High School "It's so hot in here. I think it's really fun to do this. I will miss doing this when I go back to the U.S."
JAKE JUNIOR TEI Lincoln High School "The key is to practice more I think."
The students also visited the school's natural museum and enjoyed other traditional Chinese performances.
